I've been passionate about holistic medicine long before I started my formal education, and I firmly believe that the path to true wellness involves blending the best of both Eastern and Western medicine. Eastern practices emphasize a balanced approach to health, considering not just the physical body but also the mind and spirit. Western medicine, on the other hand, provides invaluable scientific insight into diagnosing and treating ailments. Together, these two perspectives can create a more complete and personalized approach to health.
In recent years, my interest has expanded into integrative psychiatry and metabolic psychiatry, both of which emphasize treating the root causes of mental health issues rather than just masking symptoms. Integrative psychiatry takes a holistic approach to mental health, combining traditional psychiatric methods with nutritional, lifestyle, and mindfulness practices. It emphasizes understanding the biological, psychological, and social factors affecting an individual’s mental health, and how these can be addressed through a comprehensive treatment plan.
Metabolic psychiatry, which is a rapidly growing field, focuses on the connection between metabolic health and mental health. It explores how issues like insulin resistance, nutrient deficiencies, and inflammation can influence brain function and contribute to conditions like depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. By addressing these underlying factors, metabolic psychiatry offers a more personalized, effective approach to treating mental health issues.
Both of these fields highlight the importance of a well-rounded approach to mental health, where physical well-being, lifestyle, and mental clarity are all interlinked. I truly believe that optimal wellness isn't just about treating symptoms—it’s about nurturing the whole person, inside and out.
About Me
My Practice Philosophy
Hi there! I'm Jess, one of the founders of Flatland Psychiatry. I'm thrilled to be working alongside my dear friends- family medicine doctor, Dr. Satish Nayak, and family nurse practitioner, Bailey Waldrop. Together, we've set out to expand access to intentional, integrative psychiatric care in West Texas, and we couldn't be more excited about the journey ahead.

I earned my Bachelor's in Psychology from Lubbock Christian University in 2015, where I met my amazing husband and best friend, Zachary. Today, we share our lives with three beloved fur-babies - two cats (Eevee and Melinda) and one dog (Sherlock the Husky). After college, Zach and I spent a little over five years in youth ministry before I decided to transition into the medical field. In 2022, I graduated with a Master's in Physician Assistant Studies from Texas Tech University HSC (Wreck 'em!) and have been practicing psychiatry ever since.
Outside of work, I love keeping my creative side active by dabbling in portrait photography whenever I can. I also enjoy reading fantasy novels, playing video games, thrifting for antiques, and traveling as much as possible. I can definitely say that I never get bored!
